While counselling is often about understanding what happened in the past and how our experiences may have affected us, coaching is all about taking action. Coaching is very focused on the future and takes a practical, pro-active and energetic approach. Coaching can assist with finding clarity, developing plans and motivating clients to stay on track to achieve goals. During sessions, the coach will ask questions about current issues, goals and obstacles. Much of the time will be spent formulating realistic action plans. The relationship between a coach and a client is consultative and supportive. The coach is likely to be focused on motivating the client to define and achieve goals.
Life coaching is suited to clients who would like to improve their life but are not necessarily suffering from psychological distress. It is focused on personal effectiveness and development and can be used effectively in workplace environments.
